I have come to realize since being in the music industry, doing this thing called radio, that music connects us all. It doesn’t matter the color, the age, the nationality – music connects us. Now my format is Hip Hop and R&B and you would think that would only have the ear of the younger listener. I was at an event in Daytona and we had our tent set up, playing Hot 94.1 and this elderly white couple came up. She asked what R&B stands for, and I told her Rhythm and Blues. She said it sounded like Hip Hop and I told her we mix it up. Then, she proceeded to say, “I think Hip Hop is good for when you’re cleaning house, she went on to sing one of her favorites, Lil Jon & the Eastside Boyz featuring Ying Yang twins “Get Low” “Ta da window, ta da wall” and Miss Girlfriend was at least in her ?O’s, plus her husband was 87 and he proceeded to bust a move!
The music you hear in Hip Hop today is sampled from the music from the past because the artist knows it’s gonna catch your attention and it was a hit then so why not make it a hit again using their lyrics? Robin Thicke did it with Marvin Gaye’s” “Got to give it up”, which became Thicke’s “Blurred Lines.” But then sometimes artist don’t wanna give due to those before them and that’s called stealing. Isn’t Ed Sheeran going thru something like that with yet another Marvin Gaye song, “Let’s Get it On”? These artists know what’s up and they know what good music is and if you listen carefully there is a lot of sampling going on because those songs were hits, and when you hear them today it makes you think of where you were and what you were doing at that time.
These guys know exactly what they’re doing. They grabbing your ear by any means necessary, just look at Bruno Mars, need I say more? The good thing is, sampling takes ya back to the joint you remember when; it also sells the new artist today but don’t get it twisted – someone paved the way for that new joint to win that grammy TODAY! Music keeps us all connected, no matter who you are, what age you are even if you’re from Mars and that is the reason I love radio and music!
